Sindrome of colon or irritable intestine

The syndrome of irritable colon is a digestive disorder characterized by alterations in the intestinal habits and abdominal pain, in the absence of detectable structural alterations, IN LOCAL LANGUAGE THESE MEANS: that the colon looks physically perfect, but the symptoms previously described, may appear. Also, there are some changes in the feces appearance. The cause and explanation is not clear yet, however, it is highly frequent, mostly in young woman. The symptoms can be characterized by: 1. Abdominal pain with diarrhea, constipation or a combination of both. 2. The pain appears in the lower part of the abdomen or hypogastrium, an episodic pain like stomach cramps. 3. Usually the pain gets worse with food and stress, and it decreases, with the elimination of gas or deposition. It has been proved that many times this syndrome is related to the central nervous system alterations, because many times emotional factors or stress aggravate the symptoms. In order to diagnose this syndrome, the following symptoms appear: Diagnose: 01. Pain or recurrent abdominal disturbances. 02. Change in the appearance of the feces and their frequency (small feces, dry without blood). 03. Gas and burps. 4. Dyspepsia (disturbances or pain in the upper part of the abdomen), nausea and vomit. Treatment: It will depend on the severance of the symptoms. The most important thing is to calm the patient down and make an extensive nutrition history in order to identify which is the food that produces negative results. (Usually its the same food in all cases, but of course, there are exceptions). Lets divide the type of treatment by levels. 01. In minor cases, it is highly recommended to modify the diet and life style: eliminate simple sugar, refined flour, saturated fat, fried food, grains and lactose. Besides, you should apply a test diet erasing gluten for 15 days (bread, oatmeal, barley and rye), because sometimes gluten intolerance or sensitivity may be confused. BE AWARE!! Do the test for 15 days and if you still have pain, then gluten is not the problem. You should also start introducing little by little, dietary fiber (fruits and vegetables, whole products and grains). Maybe at the beginning you could have a little bit of pain or diarrhea while the body gets used to it, but with time it will disappear. There are other important tips: eat slowly, dont chew gum, dont eat flatulent vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower), beverages with gas and artificial sweetener. Do not take artificial laxatives, usa natural ones like “Cascara Sagrada”, you should also increase physical activity and work on your personal relationships. 02. If its a moderate disorder, its convenient to add psychological therapy. And finally, if the disturbances are severe, anti depressants can be added and the patient could by referred to a pain management clinic. (NOTE: This is NOT THE NUTRITIONISTS DEPARTAMENT, YOU MUST GO TO EXPERTS IN THESE AREAS). It each and every case, the affected person must have clear that its necessary to follow therapy, try to maintain calm and get enough information about his/her condition in order to understand what is happening to him/her. KEY WORDS: EDUCATION AND NO STRESS!! DEAL WITH THINGS, NOT WORRY OVER THEM!
